Why am I sore after a massage?

So, you went for a nice relaxing massage yesterday, but today you feel a little tender and sore? You’re not alone.

Many people feel sore after a massage, and there are a few simple reasons why.  Just like exercise, when a muscle hasn’t been stimulated in a while it can feel a little tender when it finally gets used again. There can be too much of a good thing!  If it’s been a long time between massages, you’re more likely to experience a little tenderness as your body adjusts to being stimulated again. Having shorter, more frequent massages will provide you with all the benefits of massage, while facilitating optimal detox pathways throughout the body. This is why the Smart Glide Pro, part of our prestige massage chair range, has a timer for each massage and takes the guess work out of your massage session.

Most commonly though, our lymphatic system is to blame.  The lymphatic system is our body’s natural detox system, and modern lifestyles often slow it down and prevent it from working properly.  We’re exposed to so many toxins in our daily lives through pollution, pesticides, processed foods, air fresheners and so much more, that it’s no wonder our lymphatic system need a little extra tender loving care.

The pain you feel after a massage is the result of the lymphatic system releasing a whole bunch of toxins as it works to remove them from your body.  The best way to support your body during this process is to have regular massages so that your body becomes more efficient at flushing out all those nasties. And don’t forget to stay hydrated!

Did you know that the average Australian is drinking drastically less water than they should?  At school we were taught to drink 6-8 glasses of water per day but how much should you be drinking? Don’t worry, we’ve done the maths!  Recent studies show that we should be consuming at least 35ml of water per kilo of body weight.  With the average Australian female weighing around 71kg, that would mean 2.5L of water a day. The average Australian male weighs around 86kg and would need at least 3L of water each day.

So, grab your water bottle before you have a massage, then sit back and relax in the knowledge that you’ll be pampered to perfection in your new inTouch massage chair!
